University Avenue Artwalk Extension / Neighborhood of the Arts
The City of Rochester received significant funding to reconstruct University Avenue and extend the successful ARTWalk in the Neighborhood of the Arts. The project aimed to enhance the streetscape, improve pedestrian access, and celebrate the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage. It involved robust public outreach and close collaboration with local stakeholders, cultural institutions, and residents to develop a vision for the improvements. The project required coordination among various design disciplines and extensive regulatory review at local, state, and federal levels.
Sue Steele, under previous employment, played a key role in the streetscape, landscape, and public plaza design. She led the facilitation of public meetings and stakeholder workshops to gather input and refine the project vision. Sue also designed several plazas and pocket parks along the corridor, contributing to the vibrancy of the neighborhood. Additionally, she managed Calls for Art, overseeing the jury process, public voting, and the commissioning of over $350,000 in public art. She provided contract oversight and supported artists throughout fabrication and installation.
