Memorial Art Gallery
The University of Rochester’s Memorial Art Gallery undertook a transformation of its underutilized campus into a 14-acre outdoor sculpture park. The sculpture park is a publicly accessible designed landscape for the nearly 300,000 visitors to the gallery, serving as a showcase for public art and a gathering space for the community.
The project included four new artist commissions and the relocation of several significant sculptural works into the park – to be enjoyed by the public at their leisure with the intent of bringing the Gallery’s collections outdoors for all to enjoy. The park also serves as the grounds for the Memorial Art Gallery’s annual Clothesline Festival, a curated celebration of artists and performance.
Zakery Steele served as Landscape Architect for Phase 1 and 2 of the project, including the design and construction phase management of the park around the publicly accessible artworks, including Wendell Castle’s Unicorn Family, and Albert Paley’s Soliloquy.
